The Hobby Of Gemstone Collecting
By Lee MacRae
The term gemology refers to the profession, science, and even art of evaluating and identifying rocks known as natural diamonds or loose gemstones. Many people take up gemology as a hobby. They become very interested in starting to collect items like loose gemstone or natural diamonds. A number of these hobbyists start to visit various locations close by to look for rough gemstones. Some of them will even tumble or finish off the gemstones themselves. If this hobby interest you read along as we discuss the in and outs of gemstone collecting.
Right at the beginning, what you need is to visit the library and get some books. You want to understand as much as possible about precious and semiprecious gemstones. The more you understand about the hobby of gemstones the less likely you are to make a mistake. You will know exactly what you are looking at.
One of the first things you look at Is gemstone color. Top grade gemstones exhibit colors similar to the purest spectral colors of orange, green, yellow, Violet or blue. Gemstone colors that are muted or are too dark are diminished in value.
Gemstone cut is easily one of the most important aspects when buying a gemstone. The gemstone must be cut with precision to reflect the light properly. A poor cut will not reflect light in a consistent way. Color saturation, color hue and color tone will always appear inconsistent
Our next consideration is the aspect of clarity. The aspect of clarity refers to the external blemishes or the internal conclusions or flaws of the gemstone under consideration. Larger flaws can be seen with the unaided eye with the others needing a 10X magnification.
Gemstones are often listed according to their size because it is more uniform than carat weight. But different gemstones may be the same size but differ in carat weights and as a result different pricing structures. This factor comes from the difference of specific gravity or relative density and depends on the materials chemical composition and crystalline structure. A one carat round brilliant diamond, for example of typical proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable a brilliant ruby of the same proportions in size will weigh approximately 1.55 carats.
Taking up the collecting of loose gemstones can be very rewarding hobby. And there is a wide range and variety in gemstones you can collect. You can start collecting gemstones like Emerald, Chalcedony (bloodstone) or Benitoite for example. The choice and beauty and variety is almost endless. And if money is tight you can go hunting for raw gemstones. Take the example of the United States. In Alaska you can find White Quartz and Jade.
