Starting The Hobby Of Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

Why would anyone collect items like loose gemstones, you ask? Well to begin with gemstones are extremely beautiful. And just like natural diamonds their value increases over time. Many in this hobby love to find, collect and finish each and every one of the 150 varieties available. Read long as we discuss the hobby of loose gemstone collecting.

To begin with you need to read up on the various gemstones available. This knowledge will help you to know what exactly you're looking for and prevent you from wasting your money. This will help you make informed decisions.

Color is a subjective idea but a very important part in evaluating a gemstone. The closer a color is to its pure spectral color the more valuable the stone becomes. Traditionally, these specter colors are orange, green, yellow, Violet and blue. Colors that tend to be paler or darker than the pure spectral color tend to be less valued.

How a stone is cut is the next factor to look at before a purchase is made. The precision of the cut is the factor which determines how much light the gemstone stone will reflect. It will fully determine the brilliance of the stone and how much someone will pay for it.

Another factor to consider is the clarity of the stone under consideration. This refers to the gemstones purity with no internal conclusions, spots, or particles inside the crystal. Obviously, stones with a lack of flaws would make the gemstone highly valuable.

Next comes weight and size. Save for pearls and corals, all gemstones are priced by the unit, carat. A carat is equal to 0.2 grams. Be aware however, that size and weight and gemstones are not the same. Density or specific gravity can very. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats, you will find a similar sized ruby or sapphire weighs 1.20 carats.

Although gems are frequently used in jewelry, loose gemstones are great for collecting. Actually there are many interesting and attractive gemstones who that are too fragile or too large to be used in jewelry. Here's a suggestion -- don't think of a gem as a component of jewelry; consider it as a piece of art and value it for its beautiful colors and the finish you apply to it. And unlike many hobbies where you have to buy everthing you can use vacation time to actually hunt for raw gemstones in stead of buying. In the US in Hawaii you can find Peridot and Coral. And in Canada you can find rhodonite at various locations in British Columbia or amazonite (microcline) near Eganville, Onttario and even hessonite garnet in Asbestos, Quebec. Take up gemstone collecting and you won't regret it.

Collecting Prescious And Semi-Prescious Stones

By Lee MacRae

The term gemology refers to the profession, science, and even art of evaluating and identifying gemstones from natural diamonds to loose gemstones. Many people take up gemology as a hobby. They collect and evaluate loose gemstones or loose diamonds. A number of these hobbyists start to travel to various locations nearby or even different countries to hunt for raw or rough gemstones. Some hobbyists will learn to cut or tumble the gemstones they find. If this hobby interest you read along as this article discusses the various aspects of gemstone collecting.

The very first step in becoming a gemstone collector the intelligent way is through the power of knowledge. By taking a quick trip to the library or local bookstore you'll find numerous books on gemstones that will make you an informed buyer.

One of the first things you look at Is gemstone color. Gemstones at the top of the ladder have pure colors there as close as possible in pureness to the spectral colors of red, orange, yellow, green, blue or violet. Gemstone colors that are muted or are too dark lowers the value per carat.

Gemstone cut is very important and is used not only to appraise diamonds along with gemstones. A precision cut will highlight the gemstone's color, lessen any inclusions and show off its symmetry and proportions. One excellent way to determine the excellence in gemstone cut is to consider if it is able to reflect light on a consistent level throughout the surface of the stone. But if a gem is cut too shallow, most of the light will refract out rather than reflecting inside the stone. Gem color appears washed out.

Next up is the clarity of the gemstone. The aspect of clarity refers to internal flaws (inclusions) or the external blemishes of the gemstone under consideration. Larger flaws can easily be seen with the unaided eye with the others needing a 10X magnification.

You will note that gemstones are categorized according to size because of being more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may have the same size but different carat weights and consequently, different in prices as well. This is due to gemstone difference of specific gravity depending upon the chemical composition and crystal structure type A one carat round brilliant diamond, for example of typical proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable a brilliant ruby of the same proportions in size will weigh in at 1.55 carats.

Getting involved in collecting gemstones can become an enjoyable pastime and could be rewarding as well over time. You can start small and don't have to spend a lot of money and yet you can end up with some very beautiful stones. Many people love to set aside vacation or weekend time to go looking for gemstones. Take the example of the United States. In Hawaii you can find Peridot and Coral. Or ou can take a longer vacation and find opal in Opalton, Yowah, Queensland, Austalia, topaz in Killiecrankie, Tasmania or hunt in the garnet fields in Fullarton River in Queensland, Australia.
