How To Collect Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Why would anyone collect items like loose gemstones, you ask? For many people it's because gemstones are extremely beautiful. And just like natural diamonds they can become extremely valuable over the years. Many hobbyists love to find, collect and finish the wide variety of gemstones available today. Follow along as we look at the hobby of collecting loose gemstones.

The first step in beginning this hobby the proper way is by acquiring knowledge about them. By taking a look in your local bookstore you can find everything you need to know that will let you make wise purchases from the beginning.

The first item to consider is the color of the stone. You want the gemstone that is as close as possible to the pure spectral colors. We are talking about violet, orange, yellow, green, blue, and red. Generally, the prices very pale or very dark precious and semi precious stones are lower in value.

The cut of the gemstone is one of the most important traits in evaluating gemstones. The cut has to be done with precision to reflect the light properly. A poor cut will not reflect light in a consistent way. The hue, tone and color saturation will never be consistent.

The clarity in a stone is our next factor. Clarity refers to the absence of flaws or blemishes inside the stone. A gemstones that is normally found to be clean is obviously valued highly. To examine flaws not seen with the naked eye you need a gem microscope or 10X gemstone clarity magnifier. Most hobbyists will buy a 10X jewelers were gemstone loup for examining coins, stamps and of course gemstones.

You will note that gemstones are categorized according to their size criteria because of being more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may have the same size but differ in carat weights and as a result different prices as well. This is due to the difference of specific gravity and depends on the materials chemical composition and crystalline structure. A one carat round brilliant diamond, for example of typical proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A ruby that is the same size will weigh approximately 1.55 carats.

Collecting various gemstones can create an enjoyable hobby and pastime. And there is a wide range and variety in precious and semi precious stones that you can collect. You can collect gemstones like Jade [jadeite and nephrite], Ruby or Zircon for example. The varieties are nearly endless. And if you like to save money but love vacations you can go gemstone hunting and find the raw materials instead of buying them. Take the example of the US. In Colorado you can find Beryl, Aquamarine, Phenacite, Garnet, Amethyst, Agate, Citrine, Pyrite, Rose Quartzcomma
