How To Start Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

Why collect loose gemstones you ask? For many people it's because they've been sought for their beauty for many centuries. And like their higher counterpart, natural diamonds they can appreciate in value over time. Many hobbyists love to find, collect and finish the nearly 150 types of gemstones found today. Follow along as we examine the loose gemstones hobby.

To begin with your first priority is to get some books from the library or bookstore. You want to know as much as you possibly can about your new hobby. The more you understand about each kind of gemstone the less likely you are to make a mistake. You need to be as informed as possible.

The chief thing you need to take into account should be gemstone color. You want the gemstone to be as close in color as possible to the pure spectral colors. This means red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. The prices for very pale or very dark semiprecious and precious stones are lower in value.

Gemstone cut is the next factor to consider before buying. The precision of cut is the factor which determines how much light the stone will reflect. It will ultimately determine the brilliance of the stone and how much it will be valued.

Another factor to look at is the gemstone's clarity. This is talking about the purity of the stone with no internal conclusions, internal particles or spots inside the crystal. Obviously, stones with a lack of flaws would make the gemstone highly valuable.

Next thing to look at is the duo of size and weight. Because gemstones vary and specific gravity or density. Weight and size are not equal for each and every stone. Take the example of a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats and an equal sized ruby would weigh 1.20 carats instead. An emerald stone would be about 0.95 carats and an Alexandrite gem stone would came in at 1.23 carats.

Taking up the collecting of loose gemstones can be a great hobby. And there are so many different types in precious and semi precious stones that you can collect. You could try collecting Emerald, Citrine or Axinite and then try others. The opportunities are seemingly endless. And if you like to save money but love vacations you can go gemstone hunting and find the raw materials instead of buying them. For example in Hawaii you can find Peridot and Coral.

Hints On natural russian diamond

Peridot is one of the few gemstones which exist only in one color green. Fine traces of iron account for the green color with a slight golden hue. It is a variety of the mineral olivine and is formed during volcanic eruptions. The amount of iron determines the variation of the color which can range from yellow-green and olive to dark lime-green. The ancient Romans noticed its color did not change in artificial light, so they named the stone evening emerald. Currently it is found in the U.S. in Arizona and New Mexico, Burma, Pakistan and China. Peridot ranks 6.5 to 7.0 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness and is the birthstone for the month of August.
