Starting The Hobby Of Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

Many people, young and old, say collecting various loose gemstones or loose diamonds is a favorite pastime. Many people have a great love of the various gemstones found around the world today. Follow along as we discuss a number of things you need to know when starting this gemstone hobby.

At the very beginning you need to learn all you can on the various gemstones available. This will help you to know what exactly you're looking for so you buy the right items. Get the answer to questions like how, where and what to buy.

The first criteria you need to evaluate is stone color. Gemstones are the most intensely colored natural material available on earth. These materials are so related to their color that they have even lent their names to specific colors. Everyone knows ruby red, emerald green, sapphire blue, aquamarine, turquoise, and jade green Gemstones are valued much higher the closer they are to the colors in the spectrum of yellow, blue, violet, green, orange and red. They drop in value when they are lighter or darker than the pure spectral color.

The cut of the stone is extremely important and is used not only to appraise diamonds along with gemstones. A good cut highlights the pure color of the stone, diminishes its inclusions, and show off its symmetry and proportions. One way of determining the excellence in the cut is to look at if it is able to reflect light on a consistent level throughout the surface of the stone. If the gemstone is cut to shallow much of the light will refract out of the gem instead of reflecting inside the gemstone. Gemstone color will be washed out.

Next to look at is the issue of gemstone clarity. Clarity refers to the internal flaws (inclusions) or the external blemishes of the gemstone under consideration. Larger flaws are visible to the naked eye with others requiring a 10X magnification.

The next factors to consider our size and weight. Save for pearls and corals, all gemstones are priced by the carat. One carat is the equivalent of 0.2 grams Be aware however, that size and weight and gemstones are not the same. Density or specific gravity can very. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats, you will find a similar sized ruby or sapphire weighs 1.20 carats.

Collecting various gemstones can create an enjoyable hobby and pastime. And there are so many different types in precious and semi precious stones that you can collect. You can start collecting gemstones like Garnet, Spinel or Natural moissanite and then try others. The choice and beauty and variety is almost endless. And if you like to save money but love vacations you can find gemstones for yourself instead of buying. Just in the United States in Michigan you can find Agate, Chlorastrolite and Hematite.

Hints On loose cultured diamonds

Zircon is somewhat soft so avoid scratches and sharp blows. Avoid hot water and
household chemicals. Brown Zicon is usually heat treated to change them to
colorless or blue Zircon. Blue stones that revert to brown will regain the blue
if reheated. Blue Zircon reheated in the presence of oxygen will change to a
golden yellow.

Authentic emeralds are very expensive, and not available to the casual collector
. However, with today.s technology scientists can make lab-created emeralds that
can be sold at affordable prices on the open market. They are made by exposing
thin slices of natural beryl to a chemical mixture that is akin to an authentic
emerald. The mixture is one of pure filtered water and acids. Then it is put
under intense heat in saline solution. Then the stone slices cool until crystal
forms and it reaches a gem like thickness. When this process is complete it can
be cut and processed like a gem.

In the 1950's the Gemological Institute of America established a system for
grading diamonds based on the four C's. This was a great asset to the diamond
community and it became the standard for grading world wide. While the system
for grading color and clarity removed most redundancies, the standards for
grading the cut left something to be desired. That is not necessarily a
criticism of the GIA; no one has been able to establish a simple a usable system
that would cover all the variables involved.
