Collecting Prescious And Semi-Prescious Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Many people, young and old, say collecting loose gemstones or loose diamonds is their favorite hobby. Many people have a great love Of the assorted number of gemstones you can find just about everywhere in the world. Read long as we look at a number of factors you should understand in starting in this interesting hobby.

The first thing you need to do is to get yourself some reading material. You want to learn as much as you possibly can about the subject of gemstones. The more you learn about gemstones the less likely you are to make a mistake. You will know exactly what to look for.

One of the first things you look at is the color of the gem. Gemstones at the top of the ladder have colors that are close to the exact spectral color of violent, blue, green,, orange or red. Gemstone colors that are somewhat muted or too dark can lower the value quite easily.

The cut of a stone is the second most important factor to look at. The precision of cut is the factor that determines the amount of light the stone will reflect. The cut will factor highly in the brilliance of the stone and how much someone will pay for it.

Another factor to look at is the stone's clarity. This is talking about the purity of the stone or the absence of internal inclusions, particles or spots inside the crystal. Needless to say, stones with no flaws would make the gemstone highly valuable.

Next item to look at is the duo of weight and size. Due to their nature gemstones can vary greatly in density and specific gravity. Weight and size are not equal for each and every stone. If a diamond of a certain size weighs 1.00 carats then a ruby of equal size would weigh 1.20 carats. An Emerald of equal size would be approximately 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite gemstone would be about 1.23 carats.

Collecting gemstones can be a great hobby. And there is a wide range and variety in precious and semi precious stones that you can collect. You can start collecting gemstones like Alexandrite and other varieties of chrysoberyl, Pyrite or Turquoise and then try others. The opportunities are seemingly endless. And if you like a hands on hobby you can find gemstones for yourself instead of buying. Take the example of the US. In Wyoming you can find Agate (including Moss Agate), Jade, Ruby, Jasper, Bloodstone as well as Star Sapphire.

A semiprecious stone is defined as: "Any gemstones other than a precious stone, or any gemstone of lower commercial value than a precious stone; specifically, a mineral that is less than 8 on the Mohs scale of hardness. A gemstone may also be regarded as semiprecious because of its comparative abundance, inferior brilliance, or unfamiliarity to the public, or owing to the whims of fashion. This arbitrary classification is misleading, as it does not recognize, for example, that a ruby of poor quality may be far less costly than a fine specimen of jadeite."

The most common method of finishing a gemstone in fine jewelry is cutting facets
. Faceting allows for the most sparkle and light reflection. Simply put, you can
tell a good cut (faceted stone) by how well it sparkles. A properly cut stone
has its facets at particular angles to reflect the most light possible. This is
because cutting a stone at the best reflective angles often means reducing the
size and weight of the stone.
