One of the first things you look at Is gemstone color. Top grade gemstones have pure colors there as close as possible in pureness to the spectral colors of yellow, blue, Violet, green, orange or red. Gemstone colors that are somewhat muted or too dark can lower the value.
Gemstone cut is an important factor to consider when buying a gemstone. The cut has to be done correctly to reflect light properly. A gemstone with the poor cut will not reflect light consistently over its entire surface. The hue, tone and color saturation will never be consistent.
Next up is the aspect of clarity. The aspect of clarity refers to the internal conclusions or flaws of the gemstone under consideration. Any large flaws can be seen with the unaided eye with others requiring a 10X magnification.
Gemstones are often listed according to their size aspect because it is more uniform than carat weight. But different gemstones may have the same size but have different carat weights that result in different in prices as well. This is due to the difference in relative density or specific gravity depending upon the chemical composition and characteristic crystalline structure. For example, a one carat round diamond with standard proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable round brilliant ruby of the same size and proportions will weigh in at 1.55 carats.
