Starting The Hobby Of Loose Gemstone Collecting
By Lee MacRae
Why would anyone collect items like loose gemstones, you ask? Well for one thing they are very beautiful items. And just like natural diamonds their value increases over time. Many people love to collect and show case the nearly 150 types of gemstones found today. Follow along as we discuss the hobby of loose gemstone collecting.
To begin with your first priority is to visit the library and get some books. You want to understand as much as you possibly can about the subject of gemstones. The more you learn about each kind of gemstone the less likely you are to make a mistake. You will know exactly what to look for.
The first item to take into account is gemstone color. You'll want the gemstone to be as close as possible to the pure colors of the spectrum. We are talking about violet, orange, yellow, green, blue, and red. Generally, the prices very pale or very dark semiprecious and precious stones are lower.
The cut of a gemstonestone is the next factor to look at. The precision of cut determines the amount of light the gemstone stone will reflect. It will ultimately determine the brilliance of the stone and its final value.
The next factor to look at is the clarity of the stone under consideration. This refers to the gemstones purity with no internal conclusions, internal particles or spots inside the crystal. Without a doubt, zero flaws are hard to find and make your stones very valuable.
Next item to look at is the duo of weight and size. Due to their nature gemstones can vary greatly in density and specific gravity. Weight and size are not equal for each and every stone. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats an equal sized ruby would weigh 1.20 carats instead. An equal sized Emerald would be 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite would be about 1.23 carats.
Collecting gemstones can be very rewarding hobby. And there is a wide range and variety when it comes to gemstones. You can start collecting gemstones like Alexandrite and other varieties of chrysoberyl, Opal (Girasol) or Cassiterite and then try others. The opportunities are seemingly endless. And if you like to save money but love vacations you can go hunting for raw gemstones. For example in New Jersey you can find Smoky Quartz, Agate, Pearl and Prehnite.

The sapphire has traditionally been involved in the area of religious magic, and
it was believed that the owner of the stone could use it to harness psychic
powers. It was, and still is, the choice of high church officials and regents
especially when their rings are mounted. There are several language origins for
the word "sapphire." In Sanskrit it was known as "sauriratna" in honor of the
planet Saturn. Ancient Chaldean references called it "sampir," while the Greeks
had a modern translation, "sappheiros" which denoted the color blue. The Arabic
translation was "safir" and the Latin texts call it "saphirus."

Sapphires do twinkle. This is caused by the smaller, microscopic stones inside
the primary gem that were created at the same time. This twinkling phenomenon is
known as "silk" referring to its silky and silvery qualities. It appears as a
star that seems to be imposed over a silk like background.
